Radio Birdman - The Definitive Reissues
Radio Birdman, legendary Australian underground band and one of the pioneers of the high energy rock n roll scene, are primed to reissue their formidable back catalogue late this October.

The reissues will initially be in the form of a limited edition CD box set that will contain the three studio albums Radios Appear (Trafalgar and Sire versions) and Living Eyes, all remastered from original tapes and each accompanied by a standalone bonus disc. Much of the bonus disc material is previously unreleased and will provide a treasure trove of material for diehard fans.

The seventh disc to make up the box set is a previously unreleased live concert recorded at Paddington Town Hall (PTH), Sydney, in December 1977 just prior to the band's departure for the UK to promote the Sire release of Radios Appear. This live recording has been mixed from master tapes that have languished forgotten for decades. The result is a totally wild and raw release that captures the bands true primal energy. Were sure it will prove to be the jewel in the crown for the box set. The bonus accompanying this disc is an all regions PAL format DVD of live footage; two clip from the December 77 PTH concert, another from a previous PTH concert in April 77, two obscure 76 Macquarie University (Sydney) tracks plus a promotional video made to celebrate the Australia only 1988 LP box set release Under The Ashes.
The studio albums will also be reissued on vinyl, these being staggered over the months leading up to Christmas. Each release will be 140g audiophile quality and where possible all artwork has been reconstructed from original photographs. The 19 track Live At Paddington Town Hall Dec 12th 77 will see life as a double LP in a gatefold sleeve.

Indeed, Radio Birdman was, for a moment, the greatest Rock & Roll band in the world. In the pressure cooker of the Oxford Hotel, Birdman cranked the sound harder and faster and pushed every moment to its limit. Birdman never played at anything less than full intensity. When was the last time that you danced non-stop for an hour and a half? When was the last time that you actually saw a band so overload the sound system that it fell apart on stage? When did you see a band that really didn't give a fuck what you or anybody else thought of them? They never played the same set twice. It was inspiring. It was, in fact, exactly what they tell you Rock & Roll is about but almost never is. Toby Creswell from the box set liner notes.

 A Little Bit of Prehistory
Detroit born guitarist Deniz Tek and vocalist Rob Younger started Radio Birdman mid 1974 in Sydney, Australia. Tek, having grown up in Ann Arbor, had witnessed The Stooges and MC5 first hand and had bought these influences with him to Australia. Younger, himself enamored with these Motor City icons, also brought a love of garage punk and many things 60s and British.
Together the pair envisioned a band that would break rules and have no regard for the status quo of the parochial Australian rock business of the time. The band would play extremely volatile and confronting music with maximum involvement from the members at all times. It was to be an art form created from passion, with no strict format or structure, which could go in any direction at any time. This would include forays into improvised visual as well as sonic realms. Loose, wild feedback drenched glory - no two performances were ever to be the same.

The Australian musical establishment reacted predictably. Many doors slammed shut immediately, engagements were cancelled after the first song and often there was the threat of actual physical violence as club bouncers were let loose on the band itself. Ultimately they had to resort to putting on its own shows in small community halls, before starting their own venue, The Oxford Funhouse, in Sydney's inner city suburb of Darlinghurst. This allowed them to perform regularly and without restrictions with the Funhouse being made available for other like minded groups who followed. Most notable of these were The Saints who were to make their first Sydney appearance there.

The Funhouse was to become the centre for the incipient crystallization of the Sydney punk scene even though the founders were not really a punk band, more like a Detroit orientated high-energy rock band with a myriad of garage, surf and New York influences not suggested by this generalized description.

Radio Birdman recorded an EP Burned My Eye and then an album Radios Appear at the nascent Trafalgar Studios. With the local music scene continually shunning them the band responded by created their own label with Trafalgar and the records were self distributed. This changed when Sire Records president Seymour Stein arrived in Australia to sign The Saints, saw a Birdman show at the Funhouse and immediately licensed Radios Appear for US and European release, signing the band to a recording contract as well. They then toured Europe and England, frequently playing with Sire label mates The Flaming Groovies, before recording a second album, Living Eyes, at Rockfield Studios in Wales.

Radio Birdman was a volatile mix of personalities. The chemistry of the members: Rob Younger, Deniz Tek, Chris Masuak, Warwick Gilbert, Pip Hoyle and Ron Keeley, combined to form a whole that was much greater than the sum of the parts. In effect, a new force was created whose energy seemed to empower members but also corrode them. As hot as the band glowed, it was inevitable that it would relentlessly burn out its components. It is a wonder that they lasted as long they did, finally giving up in June of 1978 at the end of a long UK tour.

For years following the bands demise, a wave of influence was unleashed that has ultimately crossed the globe. An entire sub-subculture, tied loosely to surf and skateboard culture, has formed based on the cult of Radio Birdman. Seminally important in the development of music in Australia, their reach has now firmly extended out internationally. Their most dedicated fans are often musicians in bands that are successful today.
