Damaged Bug & The Tarot of Personal Experience
Fellow travelers, we come with something small but very, very heavy: a limited edition tarot card deck, entirely designed and conceived by out-there artist and old friend of the Castle Face Kyle Ranson, with an accompanying soundtrack on 7” by John Dwyer’s Damaged Bug. Kyle’s paintings explode vibrantly across these lovely cards, and his permutations are both perverse, grotesque, and shockingly, richly beautiful. They do not follow the classical path of the Rider/Waite deck so much as grow a new garden from the ashes of that deck and re-inhabit it with new insects, predators, and prey. There is much loss and ruin of a modern nature in these cards. From the terrifying “Radiation” or “Power-Over” to the hilariously honest “Stoner Older Brother” and "Saturday Morning Cartoons” these cards are inhabited by both incredible gravity and humor, and seem gravely suited for divination in this mutated world of ours. People say that your first tarot card deck should be a gift, perhaps you know someone that could use a look into cards? Those already familiar with tarot will find new, fresh, and occasionally old and rotting, meaning within.
For his part, Dwyer’s "Smoggy Terminus" is massive and entrancing, mantra-like, double drums spinning like a mandala spacewards, and it’s backed by wistfully funked "Horse Egg 2" and a blinking chamber-pop slice of pie "Stellar Dust”. A little taste of what our man’s been brewing in his castle’s basement, and there is more yet to come...
